About the event

On September 25, we’re inviting you to an evening of deep listening, experimental sound and Chinese tea with Berlin-based photographer, publisher and sound curator Stefano Tripodi, aka QYMA.

The evening will begin with a focused listening session of Marta Salogni & Tom Relleen - Music for Open Spaces, released by Hands in the Dark in 2023.

Created through a series of largely spontaneous recordings between Joshua Tree, the Cornish coast and London, the album brings together tape machines, synthesizers and bass. The landscapes where it was recorded seem to become part of the music itself — transformed into texture, atmosphere and movement.

Music for Open Spaces holds a particular place in Stefano’s listening practice for the way it brings together sound, landscape and a sense of space. Moving between spontaneous composition, tape manipulation, synthesizers and bass, the album seems to absorb the environments in which it was made, allowing atmosphere and place to become part of the music itself. It is this relationship between sound, environment and attentive listening that Stefano would like to explore by presenting the album in full.

Following the full-album listening, Stefano will continue the evening as QYMA, moving through a carefully selected journey of vinyl, field recordings and digital archives — from ambient and drone to experimental music, noise and sounds from and around the Mediterranean.

About QYMA

Stefano Tripodi is a Berlin-based photographer, publisher and sound curator. Under the name QYMA, he creates listening sessions and radio programmes that explore connections between music, landscape and archival sound.

He currently hosts Ouroboros on Radio AlHara, previously held a monthly residency at Triennale Milano’s radio, and is the founder of Noisecapes, a platform for experimental sound residencies in Southern Italy.

As always, a curated selection of Chinese teas will accompany the evening, creating space to slow down and listen with full attention.
