About the event
After a sold-out first session, we're happy to welcome Funktional (Victor) back to Tea & Vinyl for his second deep listening evening with us.
This time, Victor will guide us through New Jazz In Japan (1971), a fascinating collaboration between Nobuo Hara & His Sharps and Flats and legendary shakuhachi player Hōzan Yamamoto.
The album brings together the energy and sophistication of Japanese big band jazz with the expressive sound of the shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute. Powerful brass arrangements, intricate rhythms, and the organic, breath-driven tones of the flute create an unexpected dialogue between jazz and Japanese musical traditions.
Originally from Gran Canaria and now based in Berlin, Victor is a long-time vinyl collector with years of experience discovering rare recordings and exploring music across genres and cultures. His selections reflect a genuine curiosity for sounds that go beyond the familiar, inviting listeners to discover music they might not otherwise encounter.
For this evening, we'll gather around the record, enjoy carefully selected Chinese teas, and give the music our full attention.
Victor will introduce the album and share its musical context before we begin a focused listening session. As always, we'll invite everyone to put away their phones and pause conversations during the listening hour, allowing the music to unfold without distractions.
Afterwards, we'll continue with more records selected by Victor, tea, and relaxed conversation.
